The existing suburban Palo Alto structure consists of two overlapping volumes: one a residence and the other a garage. Both are post-and-beam single-story structures, characterized by a direct and appealing mid-century building language - but not meeting the Chaisson’s spatial and functional needs. The project, currently in development, consists of three additions/alterations of the existing structure which act as new volumes in concert with the existing to shape outdoor yards and make new interior spaces. At the rear yard, a new second story master suite will float over an indoor/outdoor dining room & patio, with an adjacent one-story bedroom creating a private deck for the second-story bedroom. Another bedroom will be added on the side yard, enclosing a small court off of the kitchen. Lastly, one of the two indoor parking bays will be converted for use as utility rooms. Since the Planning Code requires two off-street parking spaces, an outdoor parking court will be created, and this court will lead to the new main entry for the structure. This new main entry is re-oriented to face the street, and is protected by an overhead structure roofed with photovoltaic solar panels to provide weather protection and mark the entry.
